Soup can order in grocery store?
Posted by admin | Under Order Groceries Wednesday May 5, 2010Would anyone have a clue as to the order of soup cans in a grocery store. They definitely are not in alphabetical order. I find myself constantly scanning every row in search of what I am looking for.
Is there any logic to how they are put on the shelves?
Product placement in grocery stores is very deliberate. There is a big benefit to being at eye level. Companies actually pay stores for prime shelf placement.
Don’t expect alphabetical or any other logical rule to shelf placement. Stores will put whatever is most profitable, or most popular where it is easy to find. Other items will take more searching.
As for brands . They pay the store for eye level shelf space . The popular types are also at eye level .

It is true that manufacturers pay a lot for the eye level shelf space.
Now as to the order they get stocked, it is usually done by cost of the ingredients in the can of soup which can vary wildly even thought the soup all has the same retail price. The manufacturers want you to buy the soup with the cheapest ingredients(more profit for them.) Or they also want you to buy the most popular variety which means they can really mass produce to offset cost.
I have worked in supermarket retail for years and know there is a reason why every item is in the exact spot you find it.
