I have asked the same question myself, but it seems that what the stores want you to do is just that, drive around. If you are in the upper eastern midwest you can go to Meijer, Kroger, even some local grocery store are going on line. Many of these grocery stores (again Meijer and Kroger) will even allow you to create shopping lists.

The best thing to do is make up menus for your grocery needs. Then stick to the menu. This will cut down on travel time, as you will be getting all of your grocery needs all to one time.

Also eat before you go shopping. Make your dinner at home being as it will be cheaper to prepare and eat a meal at home before you shop as this will cut down on impulse snacking items (if you are going to do impulse purchases try like fruits or favorite vegetables).
