Is it against the law for a grocery store to sell expired foods?

Thursday Mar 18, 2010

We have a discounted grocery store in the city which I live in and I shop there from time to time and Ive always noticed that alot of foods (dairy products) is expired by a couple of days like 2-7 and the other foods like frozen products and juice, canned goods has been expired for weeks. So my question is. isn’t that illegal to do?

no, it is only illegal when the expiration date reaches the current date, then it is illegal even if it says it will expire in a day you can still sell it untill that days come so no not untill it is the current dated

The state and city health departments have the ability to shut down stores which do this, but it’s not technically against the law.

It might be, depending on where you are. And then there are different levels of illegal this might fall into. For most of those products the expiration date recommended by the manufacture, not the government.

Can’t speak for anywhere else. But in Australia you can’t without making sure the sonsumer knows they are buying expired goods

Yes, it is. Call the health department and the attorney general’s office.
