The Union Square market is actually there four days a week. Down the block is Trader Joes where they feature great prices on things like nuts and cereal. Banana are 19 cents, bagged salad mix is $2, as is a double pack of celery. You will pay a premium in the super markets. I recommend Fairway Market at Broadway and 74ths street or so, or 125th street by the Hudson.

If you are in queens there is a green grocer on Main Street about three blocks south of Roosevelt Ave with excellent prices. Also, you might want to pick up a snack or lunch right under the train there. A portion of Lo Mein is $1.25 and two chichen legs are a buck.

There is also one down in South Ferry at the ferry terminal. Their there on Tuesdays.
