where are good places to buy cheap specific things for our first apartment?
Posted by admin | Under Cheap Groceries Monday Feb 22, 2010me and my boyfriend are moving to west sacramento and are looking for places to buy cheap
- furniture
- silverware
- socks
- waterbottles
- groceries
- decoratives
and pretty much anything that will go in a first apartment. please help. even if your not from sacramento, just stores that sell these things for cheap (but not incredibly tacky. i do want to feel at home)
i can’t pick a best answer because you all have been very helpful.
I would go with Walmart for all of the above. If you can’t find furniture that you like check out Target. Target realized that they can’t compete in the bottom end of the market and since has been offering slightly more high quality furniture than Walmart – but it is also more expensive.
What about WalMart?

Just yesterday I got on and saw someone advertise a free couch. I own a truck and had to go pick it up–but it was free. It was from a rich family that just got a new couch and just wanted to get rid of it.
It’s amazing–perfect condition. It’s very comfortable, no tears or anything, and it looks nice as well. Oh, and it also SMELLED good. Sorry, I’m so excited about my couch. It’s my first couch I’ve ever owned myself.
My girlfriend and I are trying to get our first apartment as well. But yea, it’s just classifieds with people posting used furniture/anything for sells in different sections from clothes to cars to anything. Go to the furniture section or even the free section for some amazing stuff.
Just be careful with the whole going to pick things up especially for free. Make sure you have someone (preferably your boyfriend or any strong male) with you just in case.
But a lot of people buy new furniture and just want their old ones gone asap so will sell it for cheap or just give it away.

Ikea – if there’s one in your area. They have tons of housewares and furniture and it’s very affordable. Most of the style is modern/contemporary.

craigslist.com is good. It even has a FREE section. It’s an excellent way to pick and choose what you want especially if there are photos. Just be careful when meeting people to pick up your items.
Freecycle.org is another good place. Everything offered is free. Just search on the site for the city you live in. I found a lot of great stuff. A new computer, futon, even my son’s pet guinea pig. It’s wonderful.
Big Lots used to be known for tacky stuff, but their new furniture and home decor is nice and reasonable. Walmart can be okay at times, Target has some more youthful looking decor. And sometimes these companies offer a clearance section on their website. I’ve found both Walmart and Target to have very good prices on groceries! Also, try local farmers markets or stands.
I’d check any and all local furniture companies, dept. stores, etc. online and see if they have sales or clearance. Some furniture places have rooms of discounted furniture due to minor scratch and dent. I got a $800 dinette set for $99 because of a small scratch on the table. I bought some furniture polish/stain that buffed it out and covered it for $4. Not bad!
Check local newspaper classifieds, and Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity stores have nice things donated from time to time. Most of these places use your purchases to help others in your community… so you’d be getting something nice and giving to others at the same time.
Hope this helps! God bless! : )

You have several different options to help get you started. If you have any family or friends that can give you some items to help you out don’t be embarrassed to ask. Many people start out that way. Once you try that you can check Craigslist as another answerer suggested but you have to be careful as some stuff is in really bad condition and not everyone can be trusted.
There are also many stores that sell brand new items for discount prices. You should check out stores near you that sell closeout items such as Big Lots and other similar stores. The items are all brand new but are sold for less because they’re either discontinued or had a slight mistake that is usually barely noticeable. This is a great option for people just starting out.
I did a quick search in Sacramento and here’s a list of stores I found:
Big Lots
Burlington Coat Factory (has all types of items not just clothes)
Marshalls
Sam’s Club
Tuesday Morning
T.J Maxx
These should definitely give you a jump start on furnishing your new place.
Good luck.
