My family and I are are really struggling right now and we are having a hard time with groceries? Any recipes?
Posted by admin | Under Cheap Groceries Friday Feb 26, 2010My husband and I are expecting twins in July and I have been on bed rest for a while. I’m now off of bed rest and want to start cooking again for my family, but after my job loss we only have $150 max a month for groceries for us. My 5 year old son is also a picky eater. I just need any cheap recipes or even grocery shopping ideas. Thanks.
Congratulations on the twins!
If you can, it would be best to plant a garden if you don’t already have one and you can grow your own lettuce, tomatoes etc.
Definitely buy in bulk at Costco. You can shop once for the main stuff and it will last you ALL month. Just separate and freeze things individually.
Ground beef and chicken (cheapest)for the three of you that should last all month and only cost you about $40 at the most.
Milk & Eggs $8 (Milk and Eggs will last you all month too! Organic Milk lasts longer if it’s not opened. This helps because Costco sells Organic milk in packets of 2 or 3)
Oatmeal $6
Lettuce & Spinach $7
Block of Cheese $6
Bag of Potatoes $5
Bread $3
That’s $75 and you still have $75 left to buy fresh produce 1x week
You can budget yourself $18 a week to pick up basic produce each week such as bell peppers, cucumber, carrots, orange juice etc. If you can make it on less than $18 a week for produce, you can also get a frozen bag of mixed veggies to also last all month. Costco’s bag will probably last you 2 months if you alternate with fresh produce.
Cheap and easy recipies:
Breakfast: Oatmeal with sliced bananas, Potato, Spinach & Egg Fritatta, Pancakes, Crepes, french toast
For lunch and dinners there are tons of easy chicken and ground beef recipies on foodnetwork.com. You can make home made chili, spaghetti, stew, chicken piccata, shoyu chicken, chicken katsu. All recipies can be found on Recipiezaar, Food Network or those About…websites.
Make your own salad dressing:
Honey Dijon: 1 T sherry vinegar, 1T dijon mustard, 1t honey
Greek vinegarette: 2T olive oil 1T rice wine vinegar, 1t powdered garlic, 1t oregano. Add salt, pepper and sugar if needed for sweetness.
Get the family used to drinking water and herbal tea. Tea goes a loooong way. Serve it hot or iced you can even make popsicles for your 5 year old.
I suggest your Husband join the Air Force.
